Do you remember when your mom sat you down and would give you some tips on how to find the right guy? Don’t fall in love with the first one you meet, take in as much information about them as you can, get to know them, you know the usual advice. I have noticed that some of those same tips apply to when you are trying to find the right furniture!

One piece of furniture I have never owned is a china cabinet. I guess I have never met the right one! Other cabinets seemed too stuffy, “old lady” if you will, too curvy, too big, too small, too boring, too whatever! Instead of wasting anymore of my time trying to find “the perfect one”, I gave up, thinking there just isn’t a china cabinet out there for me.

While shopping with my sister one day, I just happened to bump into this gorgeous cabinet that was different than any other china cabinet I had seen before. It was love at first sight. Her beautiful lines, perfectly aged patina, class and character had me at hello. It was definitely not your typical cabinet.

Trying not to get caught up in the moment, I did what I always do when I find a piece of furniture I instantly fall in love with…

  1. Take a photo, and get measurements of the piece, then walk away.
  2. Go home. If you are still thinking about the piece when you get there, you know you are serious about it.
  3. Look at the measurements to make sure the piece will actually work in the space. Look at the photo and visualize the piece in the space. Is it the right scale, style, color? Can you see yourself loving it long term?
  4. Discuss with your spouse or significant other the purchase. This seems silly, but you want to build a house together, not divided. Deciding together is crucial in preventing arguments and hard feelings.
  5. Purchase!!!

Following these 5 tips will help you find the right furniture for you!

Coming soon,  I will take you inside of my cabinet and show you my china cabinet essentials and how to style them.

  1. it took 20 yrs for me to find the right China hutch. I had a space filler for awhile but it just bugged me more than not having one at all. Also had a buffet inherited from my parents but not my style so it was put to work in the sewing room and one house we built out a coat closet with Lighting, shelving and a glass door. That one was beautiful but only housed the stemware and a few serving pieces. Finally got the one I wanted for our twentieth wedding anniversary

  2. Great advice, Randi! Thank you!! I need a china cabinet in my life haha! Tam xo

  3. My husband and I are moving into a house and need to acquire furniture. Thanks for the advice about measuring it to make sure it will fit and discussing the purchase with your spouse. I agree that you shouldn’t rush into getting furniture because then you could be stuck with pieces that you hate but can’t return.

    1. Thank you Sarah! I am so happy it this post was helpful! That is why I do this! Good luck filling your home, its such a fun adventure! Best wishes!!! xo

  4. I’ve been thinking about getting some new furniture for my new home. I love what you said about taking a picture of the furniture and sitting on the idea for a day. I know I would love to purchase the first thing I like but furniture last for a while and getting something that you truly like and matches the design of your home is very important. Thanks for the great read.
