Bedding Essentials – How to Make your Bed Like a Luxury Hotel

A few weeks ago I shared with you the best mattress ever and promised to share my bedding essentials with you. Today I’m sharing how you can make your bed look and feel like a luxury hotel bed, using my bedding essentials!

The older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve realized that a good night’s sleep is worth more than money can buy. The day just goes better, when you’ve had a wonderful night’s sleep.

Don’t you find that you sleep like a baby when you stay at a nice hotel. Why is that? You’re on vacation, so yes, you should be sleeping well, right?! There’s more to it than that. Comfort plays a huge role in the quality of sleep you receive.

I am breaking down my own bed, {which my husband and I believe is the MOST comfortable we’ve slept on}, to help you create a bed that will give you the best night’s sleep AND looks just as fabulous!

Bedding Essentials

Get yourself a good, comfy mattress.

Invest in a high quality mattress cover with added plush.

Ours has quilted squares filled with down and a layer of memory foam. Our mattress is firm so this layer gives that soft, hug- like effect when you lay in bed.

Use luxurious sheets.

The most important part of the bedding essentials in my opinion. When looking for a good set of sheets, look for a thread count of 300 or higher. My favorite set of sheets were found on a jackpot trip to Home Goods, I’ve sourced a similar set for you. They are soft and light weight so your skin can breath while you sleep.

It’s nice to have 2 sets of sheets so you can rotate them and so you don’t wear them out from weekly washing.

In a perfect world, your sheets get washed the same day you take them off your bed. If your world gets a little crazy like mine, and you can’t wash them the same day, having that second set of sheets that you can grab from your linen closet is a life saver.

My second set of sheets, that are also one of my favorites are ruffled sets from here.

Purchase a high quality bedspread.

In the summer months, I like to use just a quilt on our bed. It makes the bed feel light and airy for summer. The nights are warmer, so there is no need for heavy duvets. In the fall and winter, those duvets come out and are folded neatly at the end the of the bed to help keep warm. They also cozy up the room.

Keeping sheets and bedspreads neutral in color makes it easy to add color through pillows and throws if you want. It’s a blank pallet for you to mix and match whatever you want. You can see how I was able to add pops of pink to my room for summer here and blues here.

Sleep on satin pillow cases!

Satin pillow cases are a luxury I learned from my mom.

She taught me that your hair and skin look better when you sleep on satin or silk. If you take nothing else for this, do yourself a favor and buy some satin pillow cases!!! It’s such a small detail that makes such a huge difference.

While we are on the subject, get yourself a good pillow too! Throw away any pillows that have stains or have been hanging around for longer than you can remember. For Pete’s sake, you deserve a new pillow! You can read about my favorite pillow here.

Accent pillows add luxury to your bed.

These are the “frosting” on your bed. They give your bed that luxury hotel feel. When selecting pillows, look for pillows with down inserts, they will last for years and never loose their shape. Buying pillow covers is a fabulous option! You can purchase the down inserts and switch pillow covers as often as you like.

How many accent pillows should you put on your bed? Here is a chart I found on Pottery Barn that demonstrates how many pillows you could use and how to arrange them on your bed.

My bed has 3 linen, ruffled euros placed in front of my king sized pillows {make sure you fluff your pillows and give them a little karate chop to the top, so they look full and inviting}.

I promise you that when you have a bed that is comfortable, you will be a happier person! Try adding a new piece to your bed each paycheck so you don’t overwhelm yourself with trying to do it all at once.

Remember to make your bed everyday, or as frequently as you can. This is something I’ve done everyday since I was a teenager. It’s a little thing that makes life happier. When the rest of the house is a disaster from the kids and daily life, walking into my bedroom with a freshly made bed is like a gift from Heaven!

Go make your bed that luxury you deserve! I’d love to see what you do. Send me your photos, I just might do a post featuring my favorite reader’s bedrooms. I love when people share what they have learned from tips and inspiration on my site, that is exactly why I do this, to inspire other’s to make their homes and daily lives better through design.

Watch for an upcoming post on how to decorate with children in your home. We have 5. Our house gets plenty of use, but can still be nice! I’ll share my secrets. Coming soon!

  4. Hi Randi, Can you tell me where you got your mattress cover with the down squares and memory foam layer? I can’t seem to be able to pull up the website from your website. Thank you.

  5. I love the girls gold and pink bedroom. It has been my inspiration for redoing my 12 year old daughters room. In fact, it’s the only picture we both adored out of the 9 million on line. She wants skmeyhing similar hanging over her bed but I have been unable to track it down. Would you mind giving me any pointers in where I can go to look?
    Thanks,
    Amy
