Before and After

Dark to Light Kitchen Before and After – Elegant White Kitchen Reveal

Today I’m so thrilled to share our kitchen transformation with you! This has been an almost year long project that has involved hours of planning and execution. I now have a deeper appreciation for contractors and subs who work hard and do their job well! Together we took our kitchen from dark to light and brought it into this decade! The transformation is amazing! I wish you could all come and see it in person! The next best thing is a special tour just for you. Let’s go over all the details on how we transformed our kitchen!

Let’s start at the kitchen sink, the piece we can’t live without! My husband really wanted a farmhouse sink. I really did not. So we compromised and used this beautiful Blanco sink! I loved the classy, sleek stainless steel finish and charming towel bar. My husband loved the clean lines and apron front. Blanco has so many styles and options it made finding the perfect sink for us a reality. The sink quality is amazing and is the star of the island! If you are in the market for a new sink, I highly recommend the Blanco name!

To tie in the gold from the range, we installed a brass bridge faucet and matching brass sink flange. We chose a brass bridge faucet from House of Antique Hardware. They don’t have this faucet on their website, but when I inquired about a brass bridge faucet, they were so helpful to order it for me! I didn’t realize that was even an option with companies. If you don’t see what you are looking for, you may want to call and ask if they can order just what you need. This is also where we purchased our cabinet hardware and vintage doorknobs. More on that later in this post!

Having 5 holes in the counter made me nervous {we have an RO faucet too}. I was worried it would look like a parade of holes. My sweet friend Jennifer from Decor Gold Designs, talked me through my decision. She sent me photos of other sinks with the same amount of holes that looked gorgeous. If you are unsure of a design decision,  ask a friend!

These gold lanterns are the jewelry of the kitchen. They hang above the island like a statement piece around a classy lady’s neck. All of our kitchen lighting was purchased through Lighting Design Company. I gained a wonderful friend while selecting my lighting. Finding companies who treat you like a friend not a client are companies I love to work with and share! These lights are available if you call them. Like I said, if you don’t see what you are looking for, don’t be afraid to ask!

The countertops.

We purchased our bathroom countertops from Arizona Tile a few years ago when we remodeled our master bathroom {see it here} and had a wonderful experience there, so we went back. My husband and I thought we wanted quartz. It is durable and clean lined. It would bring a contemporary feel to our transitional kitchen. When we went to the showroom to pick out our tile and stone, we had them pull a marble slab and display it next to a quartz slab. We knew immediately the marble slabs were the correct choice for our kitchen. They were just more “us”.  The marble was warmer and had a personality that just spoke to us. My tip for you is to try out different options. Lay them side by side and compare your likes and dislikes and don’t be afraid to change your mind!!!

Our marble slabs are an American quarried marble called Montclair White with beautiful gray and taupe veining {here}. It has a shimmery, glittery background that sparkles under the light. It is actually more affordable that the quartz. I know that marble is more maintenance and is a more delicate product, but for me the look of it and the way it ages is beautiful and timeless.

The people of Arizona Tile are the best to work with!  They sent me home with samples to think about. They didn’t make me feel bad when I changed my mind! Their show room is beautiful and is a one stop shop for your stone and tile needs. I’ll be sharing more about my fabulous experience with them later when I share our guest bathroom reveal.

I wanted our island to feel like a piece of furniture. It got an ogee edge while the surrounding countertops received a simple edge.

The inspiration for our kitchen was our La Cornue Range. Way back in August we purchased our range and had the company hold it for us until we were ready for it. Try this!!! Spread out your purchases so you aren’t bombarded with all of your purchases all at once!!!!

I’ll be sharing a post dedicated just to this range later. It absolutely deserves its own post. I’ll just say that it is everything I hoped it would be and I don’t regret my decision for one second!

Our hood was custom made by a dear, talented friend of ours. He spent countless hours helping me design the perfect layout for our cabinets and then helped me figure out how to dress them up and make them just my style. We used simple shaker cabinets and added crown molding and decorative glass doors that flank the range to give these cabinets a custom look. If you are local you can contact him here.

The brass pot filler is another way to add some practical bling to the kitchen.

The backsplash is a 3″ x 6″ Calacatta Gold polished marble subway tile. I found it for the best price on Amazon! I looked at similar products at local shops to make sure the colors would compliment our countertops, then made the purchase. I had our tile installer use the pieces with less gold to achieve the look I was going for.

To celebrate the reopening of our kitchen I purchased some of our favorite fresh bread {I never buy bread, why… I don’t know… maybe because I can’t stop eating it!!!}. The beautiful dishes are Bella Bianca from Arte Italica

The existing wood from the family room was carried into the kitchen. Our installer did an amazing job puzzling the new and old wood together in such a way you can’t tell the old from the new. Having the same flooring throughout makes the space feel even larger. Our wood is Provenza African Plains Sahara Sun.

The antique, mirror front, fridge is my favorite part of the kitchen!  I showed my carpenter a photo of what I wanted and he and my contractor built it. One of my best friend’s owns a glass company {here}, and had the most perfect, gold aged glass to finish it off. The classy brass appliance pulls, are also from House of Antique Hardware, I’m telling you this is my favorite place to find the most perfect pieces to trim your home!

So you can see that the fridge and freezer are two stand alone units with a faux cabinet panel built to fit. They look like drawers and a door, but are really just two doors. Our old kitchen had a really small fridge. With our 5 kiddos, 4 of them boys, it just wasn’t cutting it! This change alone has made this whole remodel process worth it!

Since I wanted our hardware to tie into our crystal knobs surrounding our fireplace in the family room that connects to the kitchen, I found these gorgeous brass and crystal knobs and handles at House of Antique Hardware. They were just the right way to finish off our cabinetry! I love that they have a slight glam, Hollywood regency feel.

Taking out our corner pantry from this corner made the kitchen feel so much larger. There is more countertop space and more usable storage space. You will notice there are mostly drawers below the countertops and cabinets above. This makes it so much easier to see where things are and retrieve them without having to rearrange the whole cabinet!

Our glass cabinets mimic the cabinetry surrounding our fireplace. They are stocked with my absolute favorite dishes for everyday and formal use   -the Bella Bianca Collection and Merletto Collection from Arte Italica . You will remember these beauties styled on my Valentine’s Day and Spring tables. I’ll be sharing why you need these in your cupboards in an upcoming post.

Wow how’s that for a ton of info?! I hope you enjoyed the tour as much as I loved putting it together for you!

I’ll be sharing the details of our kitchen nook next week. I hope you’ll come back then! You can sign up for our weekly email so you don’t miss a post!

On a personal note, I just wanted to say thank you to all of those who played a part in helping me create this dream kitchen! The brands I was privileged to work with are the best of the best! Thank you Blanco, House of Antique Hardware, Arizona Tile, Lighting Design Company and Arte Italica, for not only creating beautiful products, but for creating companies that make the design process fun and enjoyable!!!

The craftsmen who shared their talents and my friends and family who helped keep me stay sane through this long and sometimes stressful process were all amazing! Let’s have a party to celebrate!!!!

  18. Randi, it’s absolutely perfect! You thought of every detail and I love every inch of it! You know how I feel about you getting that big fridge… You needed it and I could not be happier for you! Everything is exquisite. Now if only I could just have you hop on over and do mine Lol!! Love it, my friend! If I lived closer, you know I’d be bringing you some treat to celebrate it with you haha. Have a great week! Sending love and hugs….

  19. Stunning! I am very interested in your pantry removal. I bought my home new and have a corner pantry much like your previous one. My home is 15 years old now and I have an opportunity to purchase the home I grew up in….40 years old now. It will require a complete gut job….Brady Bunch staircase and all. My mother never had a pantry and since I love mine, I was considering adding a corner pantry. Do you miss yours and where here now do you store your pantry items? I absolutely love everything you have done in every room!

    1. Hi Michelle! I do not miss my pantry at all! I felt like there was so much wasted space in between the shelves. We put all of our pantry items into the cupboards flanking the refrigerator. Instead of shelves, I had rolling shelves installed in them so I can pull them out and can reach everything in the back. Good luck with your childhood home! xoxo

  20. wonderful style! You thought of every detail. So you have really made a balanced decision. I’m currently decorating a kitchen. You have given me encouragement and inspiration!

  21. Your kitchen is beautiful !! I used your link for the lights but their website is huge. Can you tell me the manufacturer name so I can narrow down the search. Thanks

  22. A truely stunning space in every way. Whenever I see a white kitchen makes me realize the $60, 000 mistake I made only 3 years ago with Espresso Cherry.
