Pink and Gold Girl’s Bedroom Makeover

Pink and gold bedroom by Randi Garrett Design

We have five children in our family.  Four boys and one girl. Our poor daughter! She is smack in the middle of them.  Two who are older, and two who are younger!  She is a trooper.  For awhile, she shared a room with her younger brother, until the baby was big enough to bunk with someone else.

Here’s what her room looked like before the makeover…

And After…

When the day finally came for brother to move out, we began to make plans for a pink and gold girl’s bedroom makeover.  The goal was to create a girly bedroom for her to call her own, a haven from all of the boys!  We wanted to design a room that could “grow” with her through her teenage years and would be able to switch out minor things for a fresh, fun look later if needed.

If you are planning a room makeover  here are some important points to keep in mind….

  1. For larger, more expensive pieces, choose items that are high quality and timeless in style.  Spending a little more money on a piece you know you will have for years, is worth every penny.

This bed is the focal point of the room, so spending a little more on it was worth it. It took a lot of searching to find the headboard I had envisioned.  There were many that were either the right shape but wrong color, or right color but wrong shape, or not in my budget.

Finally I decided to call my local upholsterer, just to see how much it would be to have him make me exactly what I wanted.  Believe it or not, he was right on the money!  He created the envisioned piece that will last for years out of a durable, creamy, velvet fabric we got to choose!

Don’t be afraid to call your local upholsterer.

I found a similar tufted headboard for you here.

Invest in nice sheets, head pillows and duvets that will last a long time.  Spend less on pieces you will tire of in a few months or years.  I like using a good white or neutral colored duvet, or bedspread, that can be mixed with any pattern or color and can be bleached and washed a hundred times over.

3. Making over a room takes time.

This bedroom makeover took me 6 months to complete.  Purchases were spread out over those months so I wasn’t hit with a massive makeover bill.  This allowed me to save up for higher ticket items and really search for sales.  When rooms are decorated over time, they take on an eclectic  personality rather than a staged look.

Phase 1

  • Purchased the main pieces in the room – the bed {custom, similar here}, nightstands, neutral bedding and lamps {out of stock, similar here}.

Phase 2:

Painted the room {Ralph Lauren’s Edwardian Linen mixed by Dunn Edwards}, added trim to the windows to give them more weight, installed crown molding,  added more decor details, the bench, rug, chandelier and accent pillows.

Phase 3

Found drape fabric, sheets that add more style, some glam frames, and a girly wall plaque {similar here}. {Notice the empty frames. They sat empty for weeks!}

I like to have 2 -3 sheet sets on hand to rotate through. The ones we have for Ellie’s room are the gold polka dot sheets, white ruffle sheets, and pink embroidered scalloped edge sheets.

Shop all the sheets and other sources by clicking the photos below.

Next time you find yourself making over a room, remember…

  1. Splurge on larger, timeless pieces
  2. Choose neutral, high quality bedding
  3. Remind yourself it is a process that takes time, be patient!!!

and most important, HAVE FUN!!!! My daughter and I created much more than a girly bedroom. We made memories that will last forever.

    1. Kathleen thanks so much for stopping by, you are so kind! Yes, she is so cute about her room. She even keeps it clean and makes her bed everyday because she wants to keep it nice!

    1. Thanks Kelley! It is so hard to be patient and wait for the pieces when really all you want to do is snap your fingers and have it done! Thanks for being such a good friend!

  1. Beautiful room! I’m going to use this as inspiration for my nursery, and I’m so happy to have finally found a beautiful space that I love! The curtains are perfect. Are the custom?

    1. Brandy congrats on your little one and have fun designing her nursery! I looked everywhere for drapes that matched the room, with no luck. I found some fabric in LA at the fabric district and made some. Best wishes to you and your little one! xo

  2. I absolutely adore the bed and is exactly what I am looking for! I am with you in the fact that I found things that were close but not quite right. So how do I go about getting an upholster to do this for me?? Do I purchase a headboard and have them add diff fabric?? I’m a newbie lol!

    1. Hey Melissa! It’s really an easy process. The hardest part is finding a good upholsterer. Once you do, find a photo of what you want, show that to your upholsterer. They can give you a quote and you can go from there. They will provide all of the supplies, you may need to provide the fabric or order it through them. Good luck! It’s really a fun project!

  3. Beautiful! I love the pale pink quilt. May I ask where you found it? I’m looking for one exactly like it. Thanks!

    1. Thanks Mary! I found my quilt at my local Home Goods I bet you could google pink bedspread and find something similar. xo

    1. Welcome and thank you so much! I’m so glad you found us! xo

  4. Love this!! I have been looking for a room inspiration for my daughter and this is perfect!!

Where did you source the leopard fabric for the chair/pillow and pink drapery fabric?

    Again…very beautiful!

  5. This is absolutely stunning!! Exactly the kind of look I was going for. Where did you purchase the headboard and dresser? Loveee the gold bow handles also!

    1. There is a link at the bottom of the post showing a similar one. The exact one I purchased is no longer available. I hope that helps!

  6. Hi Randi!

Love this room! What brand and color is the paint on the walls?

    Thanks!

    1. My whole house is Ralph Lauren’s Edwardian Linen. xo Randi

    1. Randi, I could not find the 3 prints on the left side of the window. Where did you find the ballet shoes, coin purse and french girl images?

      1. Hi Jennifer,
I too researched those prints and I was only able to find and purchase the 8X10 Jacques Levine print “leopard flats”.
The contact email address is: Melissa@inslee.net
        Hope this helps!

    1. Thank you! The trim in my whole house is Swiss Coffee by Behr. xo

  7. Absolutely Beautiful!!! Do you mind sharing the height of the bed? You’re right, finding the right headboard can be tricky. I’ve been looking and my biggest concern is finding the right height: not too high for the room, no too short that it doesn’t stand out. Thanks!

  8. Your room is absolutely beautiful. I have been searching everywhere for those nightstands. Can you please tell me where you purchased them?

    1. Sure! I just updated the link to the exact nightstand I purchased for my daughter’s bedroom! I hope that helps! xo

  9. I love this room! I have been looking for the perfect gold chandelier for my house and I think this is it! There were a few different finish selections. I was wondering if you bought the polished brass for your chandelier?

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Sarah! Thank you for your sweet comment! I did order the polished brass finish. We love it too! I hope that helps! xo

  10. I cannot find the prints on the left! Leopard ballet flats, French girl, and coin purse.. I don’t want to order the other 3 and they not match. Please please help!
    Thanks!

    1. I couldn’t find them to source them for you! I’m so sorry! As long as the frames are the same and the mats, you will be fine to select 3 different prints that look similar. I hope that helps! xo

  11. I love this room! I was trying to find the pink quilt, I clicked on the link but it said error. Do you remember the site you bought it from? I’d live to know! Get job, thank you!

    1. Hi Kyra! Try going to my room source tab under, pink and gold tween bedroom. There is a pink quilt sourced there for you. I found my daughter’s exact quilt at Home Goods. I sourced a similar pink one there. Let me know if you can’t find it. xo

  12. Amazing job, room looks beautiful! A dream room for any girl. Could you please share what type of carpet you have in the bedroom? I love the natural look to it.
