Summer Fades to Fall Family Room Tour
There’s a beautiful in-between moment when summer loosens its hold and fall begins to whisper through the house — sunlit blue blossoms slowly being edged with wheat and warm texture. If you want your family room to feel like “summer fading to fall,” keep the breezy blues and florals in front, then introduce late‑season textures (wheat, magnolia, velvet, pumpkins) as soft accents. Today I’m sharing how I added touches of fall into our family room giving it a whimsical fall feeling.

The Mantel — the star of the show
Our mantel became the playful storyteller of the season. I wanted whimsical movement, color, and texture, so I leaned heavily on curly willow for its whimsical, airy lines.
Here’s the step-by-step approach:
- Build vertical movement: Curly willow branches (I used 2) give the whole display a sense of motion — they arch and curl and add structure to the arrangement. I wanted it to feel like vines were crawling over the mantel slowly taking over summer.
- Add weight and color: Magnolia blossoms (I used 5) come next. Their peachy pink tones are perfect for setting the color scheme. Tuck a few pointing down and a few pointing upwards.
- Keep summer in front: To honor the “summer fading” theme, I tucked blue blossom branches (I used 12)through the willow. These are my favorite!
- Introduce fall texture: Next, I added wheat (I used 5) and sedum (I used 7)among the blossoms. The soft gold of the wheat warms the palette, suggesting fall, but it’s subtle enough that summer still feels dominant. You can also use these golden hops instead of the wheat stems.
- Soften: Eucalyptus sprigs (I used 5) were woven throughout for softness, gentle movement that ties the whole display together.
Hydrangea Arrangement
This fall arrangement was so simple to put together and really connects the room with the mantel. Use 10 hydrangea, (budget option) 5 blueberry stems, and 6 wheat stems to recreate this look.
Velvet Pumpkin Vignettes
White panne velvet pumpkins with blue blossom branches woven around the stems add another whimsical touch to the family room.
Throw Pillows
Pillows are such a powerful punch for your space! I selected these stunning floral throw pillows as the focal point for our fall family room. The gorgeous color pallet blends beautifully with the soft colors of the mantel. Blue velvet pillows bring a cozy warmth to the room and the blue and white fretwork pillows (lumbar here) add a touch of texture.
