A Soft & Elegant Fall Family Room

Fall has officially made its way into our family room, and this year I gave it a soft, colorful twist!

I wanted the room to feel warm and cozy for the season while still staying true to the soft blues, creamy whites and greens I love year-round. Instead of changing everything, I simply layered in a few touches of fall.
Rich olive green velvet pillows instantly warmed up our blue and white palette, while floral pillows added another layer of color and pattern. I love how the deeper green makes everything feel a little cozier without making the room feel dark or heavy.
Bring the Outdoors In

One of my favorite ways to decorate for fall is with beautiful branches and florals. I filled one of my favorite blue and white ginger jars with these gorgeous, oversized faux magnolia branches (10 stems – use my code RANDI20 to save 20%) and elegant magnolia blossoms (6 stems). The glossy green leaves and warm brown undersides bring in the prettiest touch of autumn while still feeling elegant and timeless. For a less full look, reduce the number of branches and stems by half.
And don’t be afraid to go BIG with your branches! An oversized arrangement can completely transform a room and often makes more of an impact than lots of smaller seasonal accessories scattered around.

Create One Beautiful Fall Moment

Of course, the star of our family room this season is the mantel. I wanted it to look like an overflowing autumn garden, filled with magnolia leaves, magnolia blossoms, soft blue vibernum, sunflowers, dahlias, figs, acorns and little touches of warm autumn color.
I shared the entire step-by-step tutorial—including exactly which stems I used and the order I layered them—in my Lush Fall Mantel with Soft Blues & Autumn Tones tutorial. If you’d like to recreate this look in your own home, you’ll find all the details there!

Add a Few Cozy Finishing Touches

For the coffee table, I kept things simple with a soft velvet pumpkin draped with a stunning fig branch, a favorite pumpkin candle (use my code RANDI15 to save 15% off)in the most beautiful tortoise vessel and textured green trays. Little seasonal touches like these are often all you need to welcome fall. Rather than replacing everything for fall, try adding a velvet pillow, a beautiful branch, a pumpkin or two, and a candle in a cozy scent.
Most importantly, use the colors you already love in your home. You don’t have to completely change your palette to decorate for fall. Start with what you have, layer in richer textures, natural elements and a few warmer tones, and your home will instantly begin to feel ready for the season.

Cozy Up with Throw Pillows

One of the easiest ways to give a room a seasonal refresh is with throw pillows! I kept our favorite soft blue and white pillow and floral prints in our family room and added rich olive green velvet pillows (22″ with a 24″ insert) and blue and olive greek key little lumbar pillows for a little extra warmth. The mix of pattern, color and cozy texture gives the whole room a fresh fall feel without changing the palette I already love.
It’s such a simple trick to try in your own home—keep the pillows you love and swap in just a few seasonal colors and textures. A couple of new pillows can completely change the feeling of a room!
