Elegant Master Bedroom Makeover – Dark to Light

My friend Karin and I have been friends for almost 11 years! We have raised our kids together, served in church together, vacationed together, baked together, cried and laughed together! Karin came to me a few months ago telling me she wanted to makeover her master bedroom. I came over to her house and took some pictures of her room and brainstormed some ideas of how to transform her bedroom. Karin found a bed she loved. So using that as the inspiration for the room, we set out to take her room from dark to light, from drab to fab! Much like my family room and kitchen remodels here and here.

Here is a look at her room before…

Elegant Master Bedroom Makeover - Dark to Light Transformation

She has had her bed since she was a teenager. Her husband painted it and tried to make it work for as long as possible. The dressers and nightstands were also hand-me-downs that were given a fresh coat of paint. The pieces have served their purpose, and it was time to lay them to rest! After a few months of shopping, painting, trim and finishing work, here are the results of this elegant master bedroom makeover! It has gone from dark to light!!!!

Can you believe that transformation?!!!! Not only does it feel light and bright, it feels like a true retreat for my sweet friend!

Here is what was done to give this room such an amazing fresh feel…

  • The room was painted in my favorite neutral color paint, the same as my house, Ralph Lauren’s Edwardian Linen {mixed by Dunn Edwards}
  • Crown molding was added to give the room some detail.
  • The ceiling fan was replaced with a glam chandelier {here}. That took a little convincing on her husband’s part, but he finally saw the light!
  • All the old furnishing were donated and updated.
  • The bed {here} was dressed in new, luxurious linens from Pom Pom at Home.
  • Window treatments were updated to wooden shutters.
  • Fresh white drapes {here} were added to soften the windows.
  • New lighting and accessories were sprinkled through the room to freshen it up.

What a list!!!! This process WAS NOT done over night! It took months to complete! So if you are contemplating a room makeover, be patient and know that it is worth the wait!!!

The mirrored nightstands add some glam to the room. Mirrored furniture is my favorite accent in a bedroom. The light and reflection it provides really add a sparkle and romance to the room.

Most of the bedding is from Pom Pom at Home. They are the most luxurious linens that truly stand the test of time. We used the Oslo quilt and euro shams for the bed. The Madison duvet set and euro were also used to make this bed an amazing retreat! Draped at the end of the bed is my favorite fluffy throw, also from Pom Pom at Home. Karin picked up the light blue ruffled quilt at a local shop. I have a similar one sourced for you in the sources list below.

Quilt | Ruffle Duvet set with king sized shams | Ruffle Euro | Quilted Euros {we used 2} | White throw | Blue Quilt {similar}

We placed an oversized chair and ottoman in the corner for a quaint relaxing spot. The chair had a dark wood finish. A fresh coat of cream paint  instantly made it feel like it belonged in the room. Don’t push aside a piece of furniture you love if it is the wrong color. Use a little elbow grease and give it a fresh coat of paint!

Hanging family photos will fill in the blank wall behind the chair.

Use fur pillows and throws to soften your room. Fur has a way of soften a room without making it feel too feminine.
The other side of the room features a large sitting area. Linen club chairs {similar here and here} and a tufted ottoman  {here } were used to update this space.

This was such a fun project to do together! Transforming this dark master into a light, elegant master retreat for such a dear friend was truly a dream! Karin and her sweet husband Bryan now have a room that matches their deserving hearts!

    1. Hi Ann! Thank you so much! If you look under the accessory details at the bottom of the post. You will see a picture of a gold curtain rod. Click on that for a similar one. The one used in this room was custom made by my friend’s brother in law. The window was way too long for a store bought rod. She spray painted it gold and used hardware and rings from a local shop. I hope that helps! xo
