Fashion Friday – How to Mix Patterns in Fashion and Home Decor

Pattern mixing is everywhere! It’s in fashion, tablescapes and home decor! Just grab a fashion catalog or design magazine and you will find examples of how designers and fashion companies are mixing pattern in every way possible.

As a neutral loving gal, pattern mixing is key to adding that unexpected, eye popping punch. Whether it be in an outfit, on a tablescape or in my home, pattern mixing is trending and on point!

Mixing florals with animal print is my favorite way to play with pattern in my wardrobe. Invest in a few floral pieces that you can mix into your wardrobe.

Next add some animal print. Leopard is my personal go to in the animal print department! It is a neutral and goes with any color and print. Some leopard wardrobe essentials are a belt, pair of heels and or flats, scarf and purse. I use these pieces daily. You will feel a pep in your step when you toss a little leopard in the mix!

Tablescapes are one of the funnest ways to play with pattern mixing! Tables get set up, enjoyed than taken down all to be recreated all over again. I like to look at the table as a blank canvas that gets to be covered with whatever patterns or colors I can imagine. Combinations that I wouldn’t be bold enough to try in my home decor, get to be tried out on the table. {See more of this table here}.

Start with  your china essentials, you can see my essentials here,  and pair them with bold patterns and colors. Leopard isn’t just for your wardrobe!

Invest in a set of white dinner plates then accessorize them with dessert plates that have a pattern.

When pattern mixing in your home decor, follow this simple rule… Use a large print, a medium print and a small print.

For example, in my daughter’s bedroom, there are 3 patterns on her bed. The large print is the leopard, the medium is the pink striped, and the small is the polka dot.

Our guest bedroom has 3 prints as well. The cream damask, black dalmatian print and the black damask print.

Finally in my son’s room there is a tan stripe, navy buffalo check and a navy plaid.
