My two oldest boys only have a few more years left in our home before they head off to college, and have been begging for a fresh new look for their bedroom. I was convinced immediately, Dad on the other hand was harder to convince {isn’t that how it always goes?} We won him over with the argument that if we started their “teen bedroom makeover” now, they could actually enjoy the room transformation for a few years before they head off to the real world.
The first order of business was to lighten the walls. Their room was painted a dark brown, with a navy blue stripe in the center. The dark colors made the room feel small and kind of depressing. There is only a french door for natural light, so lightening up the walls was essential to making the room feeling lighter and larger.
{Here’s their room before}
One day I was reading one of my favorite blogs, Edith and Evelyn Vintage by Cindy, when I stumbled upon a post she had written about Pure and Original Paint. Since paint was on my mind and I had never heard of this paint before, I read on and was quite impressed with the results of her project and decided to research the paint further.
Pure and Original Paint originated in the Netherlands 40 years ago and is considered to be paint of the highest quality, made with all natural, mineral pigments in a water base, and is completely environmentally friendly, no VOC. Pure and Original Paint just introduced their paint in the States last year.
What really caught my eye was their Fresco Lime paint. I was looking for a way to add character to my boy’s room and still keep it light and bright. Their Fresco paint leaves walls feeling aged and washed with a soft gorgeous, velvety texture reminiscent of historic European walls. Everything that makes my European loving heart happy!
We choose a light gray color called Ashes for the focal wall and a cool white called Island White mixed with their Classico paint {a chalk based paint}, for the other 3 walls. The transformation was unbelievable!
{all items are sourced at the end of the post}
Now the room looks more spacious, bright and mature for these two teens. The Fresco wall is even more beautiful in person! It is hard to capture all of the subtle color variations. Regular paint has no visual texture and is so one note. Fresco Lime paint has light and dark areas which in turn gives the wall personality, a gentle aged look, like your favorite pair of jeans. I love it!
Had I chosen a darker color, the contrast would have been more drastic. Below are a few examples of Pure and Original’s Fresco paint in darker colors. The results are luxurious and stunning. It truly is the Louis Vuitton of paint.

My boys chose beds that have a slightly industrial feel, with a light gray slip cover that softens the cold metal. The bedding incorporates shades of gray and blue with a touch of off white for some contrast.
The addition of brass accents gives the room some dimension. The art above the nightstand has a mirrored mat which allows light to reflect of that wall tricking the eye to believe the space is larger than it’s actual size.
Light brown throws tie in the color of the wood furniture and help soften the room.
Let’s talk about one of my favorite finds for the room… the hamper! The style is perfect for the room AND it has dividers so my boys can sort their own laundry!!!! Not to mention the wheels which make getting laundry around the house a breeze {our laundry room is on the other side of the house from their bedroom, you can check out our laundry room makeover here}.
My boy’s love Hurley and Van’s so we used their logo’s as art in these simple gold frames.
A few rustic shelves hold their favorite treasures like a totem pole from Maui, a gator head from New Orleans, trophies and signed memorabilia. My dad taught my boy’s to love rocks. These framed agate rocks were the perfect touch for their room. Pieces with sentiment are the best way to take the “model home feel” out of a room. They give the room a heart.
The braided pillows and pouf add more texture to the room. Since there isn’t a lot of pattern in here, texture is key.
Brass has made a major comeback in the design world. You can find accents and decor popping up all over.
The boys are thrilled with their teen bedroom makeover and even try harder to keep it clean. Now a disclaimer, this room was a process, a 6 month process! Don’t be fooled for one second that this happened overnight like you see on tv. We purchased furniture pieces last year and have been slowly accumulating pieces as we find them, it’s part of the fun!
If you are planning to paint a room or a wall and want to make a statement, I would recommend Pure and Original Paint 100%! I am already plotting my next project!
