We have lived in our home for over 11 years! We’ve been busy updating and renovating many of the rooms in our home. Our upstairs family game room has always been a hodge podge of left over furniture. It’s been the low priority, forgotten room tucked upstairs. When our children were little, they rarely played up there. They wanted to be where the action was, downstairs with the rest of the family. Now that our kids are older, they really need a place to hang out with their friends.
I was bound and determined to transform that unloved space into a usable, lovable place for our family and friends to hang out.
A few weeks ago I talked about decorating in phases. I used those same steps to redesign our family game room. Phase one began a little over a year ago when we remodeled our kitchen. We had our contractor add trim to our stairwell and upstairs family room to start the transformation. We knew that it would be a while before we could finish the rest. So we started with the bones of the room.
Well today, after over year, I am finally sharing our transitional family game room reveal!!! It is now one of my favorite rooms in our house! I am SO excited to share this space with all of you and hope that it inspires you in someway to make your least favorite room in your home – your favorite!
Here’s a look back at what the room looked like before our transformation…

Transitional Family Game Room Reveal
Because the room’s color scheme is so soft and neutral, texture played a huge role in the design of the room. I chose Greek Trimmed Linen Drapery to add a little pattern to an all white wall. They are seriously fabulous and way less expensive than custom drapery! Use a brass curtain rod to make your drapery really pop!
The brass chandelier is a transitional style. I love how it lights up the room at night and the sparkle it adds durning the day! The gold is more of a champagne color. It is perfect!
For more texture and interest, I used chunky throws and tassel throws from Pom Pom at Home. Throw pillows with fun pattern and trim, also from Pom Pom at Home {their products are some of my favorite}. This is a little tip that will help you add personality to a neutral room without interrupting the calm color scheme. The greek key pillow plays off the greek key trim in the drapery. Use at least one bold print in a neutral space like this antelope print pillow .The beaches of Southern California hold a special place in our family’s hearts. So the calming colors of the beach were my inspiration for this room. Before, the room felt dark and depressing. My main goal was to brighten it up and make it a happy place for the family to hang out.
The first thing we did was add molding to the walls and paint them white. To save money, we added the trim right over the top of the textured walls. We also switched out the carpet for wood. These two changes made the room feel twice as large and bright!
Before our hallway had a bunch of wasted wall space.White shaker cabinets were installed to maximize the storage on that wall. I designed a layout similar to the layout of our refrigerator wall in the kitchen to tie the two rooms together. We had leftover marble from the kitchen remodel, so we used that as a divider for the upper and lower cabinets {just like in the kitchen}.
The same gold and crystal handles were used on these cabinets as in the kitchen as well. I just love the crystal with the touch of gold.
For the art, I found some cool and affordable beach prints and had them framed in a champagne frame with a white mat. The kids hamper is a large beachy lidded basket. I used the large size for their hamper and the medium lidded basket to hold throws in the family room area.
This tv wall is the funnest part of the room! Our contractor helped me design a wall that would allow the kids to play video games together or watch 3 different ball games at a time! Watching March Madness in here is so awesome! We had our AV guy hide all the components in a closet in the next room. The glam tv console serves storage for games and toys.
The stars on the console weren’t as gold as I wanted them to be, so I added a little Rub and Buff to them to make them pop a little more.
Back in the early days of our marriage, I taught second grade. I have a deep love for children’s books. So I used some of my favorites as accessories for the room. Can you believe these white hydrangeas and eucalyptus are faux?
Transitional Family Game Room Furniture Details
Now let’s talk about the biggest, most important pieces in the room – the furniture! The pieces that went in this room had to be very durable and comfy.
Sectional
I fell in love with this classy sectional the minute I laid eyes on it. I love it’s clean lines, nailhead trim and tailored skirt. There are lots of fabric options. We choose a neutral color that is durable and very childproof.
Leather Club Chairs
These swivel club chairs are a family favorite. They swivel so you can turn and watch the tv or face the couch for games. The kids and adults all love them! They too come in tons of fabric options. I called and ordered more samples because I wanted leather. Gray leather was the winner! Are they comfortable? YES!!!!
Ottoman
So for the sad news, I can’t find this ottoman anywhere for you guys! I ordered it a few months ago and it has up and vanished. I am so sorry. The lucite legs, scalloped nailhead trim and curved lines make it so unique! Don’t you worry, I will be looking out for it – if and when I find it, you will be the first to know! Follow me on Instagram where I share lots of tips and finds.
I found some similar options for you below.
Side Tables
Our gold side tables have a touch of glam with their semicircle legs and glossy seagrass top. I love how they pop agains the cream sectional and white walls.
Rug
Another sad story. This transitional rug is perfection. But it is sold out until October. It’s so worth the wait! It has just a hint of blush amide the sea of soft khaki and grayish blue. Once again, I will announce when I see it back in stock on Instagram or in my weekly newsletter. There are similar options for you below.
Tv Stand
Our transitional TV stand , love it! It holds a ton and has hidden outlets inside for media components. The gold star details pair beautifully with the sunburst mirror above the couch.

Just wondering what size pillows you went with….is the antelope pillow 20 x 20 and the other accent pillows the smaller size?
What size rug did you go with?
Thanks and love following along with your design fun! You do a wonderful job!
Sincerely,
Natasha Kalita
Hi Natasha! The antelope pillows are 20 x 20 and the other ones are 18 x 18. Our rug is 9 x 12. Thank you for your kind comment!!! xoxo

Thank you Jo! I am so excited for you to get here! Hurry up!!! xo
WOW! This is a stunning transformation. It is definitely one of the most elegant family rooms I’ve ever seen. It also looks like a glamorous master suite sitting area. Having had 4 boys, with 2 still at home, sadly, all those delicate breakables would not last one minute in our house! ha ha ha! We have a similar sitting area in our basement, which is where my tweener , teenager and their friends hang out, and I admit, it looks a whole lot like your uninspiring “before.” Although I have a chenille sectional, I’d actually prefer a leather one to wipe up soda spills, butter from popcorn, etc. Someday, when my kids are grown, I’d love to have it look more like this, though I suspect my hubby may claim it for his “man cave.” Ha ha ha! I’m so envious that your tweeners/teens don’t mind a more grown-up space for their hangout. A win-win for you, for sure! Enjoy!
Ha Ha! You are so right on all counts! This room is definitely designed with my children’s needs in mind. You could use the same bones and tweak it to make it more age appropriate. Hug those babies tight, the time goes by faster and faster the older they get! Thank you for taking the time to leave such a sweet comment! xo
Randi my jaw is ON THE FLOOR!! Seriously!! This is so beyond gorgeous! LOVE LOVE LOVE every single thing you did! Feeling proud to have such a talented friend! 🙂 XO
Erin I just love you! Thank you so much! You are such a sweetheart! xoxo
You proved that it’s possible to have a ‘family room ‘ without a leather sofa! Yay! Elegant & family friendly – You’re my hero! Love it!
Haha! Yes it is possible! Thank you so much for your comment! Wishing you a lovely day! xo
Love the room. Could you tell me the specific paint colors?
I’m just beginning the research for some makeovers. You are a great resource. Thank you🌺
Randi!!! This looks sooo good! You have ALWAYS had such a talent for this! I seriously have three rooms that need love like this! You are an inspiration!!!

Randi, what an amazing space!! Serious perfection in every way! You did an incredible job – this flows seamlessly from the rest of your gorgeous home! I want everything in here!! And those TV’s!!! My son and hubby would be in heaven…
You have outdone yourself yet again my friend, bravo!! xoxo
