My Best Tips for Creating the Perfect Cozy, Layered Bed
One of my favorite ways to welcome a new season into our home is by refreshing the bedrooms with cozy, beautiful layers. You don’t need to completely change your bedding to make a room feel fresh. A few simple styling tricks can make your bed look fuller, softer and so much more inviting.
Over the years, I’ve found a few tried-and-true tricks I use almost every time I style a bed. Here are my best tips for creating that perfectly cozy, layered look.

Start with Really Good Sheets
Before we get to all of the pretty layers, let’s talk about the layer that actually matters most—the sheets!
These are our favorite sheets, and we use them year-round. They are incredibly soft to begin with and somehow get even softer every time you wash them. I also love that they feel cool and comfortable during the warmer months, yet cozy and warm during the winter. They come in several colors too! We have the Sea Glass in our Casita, Sand in the Cloud guest bedroom and the French Blue in our bedroom. The best part – I GOT A CODE FOR YOU! A beautiful bed should look inviting, but it should feel even better when you climb into it!

Smooth Out the Wrinkles + Add a Fresh Scent
Here’s one of my easiest tricks for getting that smooth, freshly made bed look without pulling out the iron or steamer. Once the sheets are on the bed, I lightly mist any wrinkles with Wrinkle Releaser or even just a spray bottle filled with water. Smooth the fabric with your hands and, as it dries, so many of those wrinkles disappear.
And because I love a bed that smells as good as it looks, I finish with a light mist of my favorite linen spray. It gives the bedding that delicious, fresh-from-the-dryer scent and makes the whole room feel extra clean and inviting.
It’s such a simple finishing touch, but it makes the bed feel freshly made and ready to climb into.

Create a Soft, Neutral Foundation
I love starting with a white quilt (look for less) or cream quilt (Look for less). Keeping these larger pieces neutral gives you a timeless foundation that works from season to season. Then you can completely change the look of the bed simply by switching out your pillows and throws.
This white quilt has exquisite silkiness making the Monaco coverlet a luxurious and indulgent touch to any bed. You can use my code for 30% off! RANDI30
The cream velvet quilt is a heavier weighted quilt with a buttery soft finish. Again so luxurious!
One of my favorite bedding tricks is to use a king-size quilt on a queen-size bed. The extra fabric drapes so beautifully over the sides and instantly makes the bed feel fuller and more luxurious. As a bonus, your quilt can easily be interchanged between your queen and king beds when you want to switch things around.

My Formula for a Full, Layered Bed
There’s definitely a little formula I tend to follow when styling a bed. I start with three Euro shams in the back to create height and give the bed that plush, full look.
Next, I layer two to three 22-inch statement pillows in front. Here’s another one of my favorite tricks: I use a 24-inch insert inside a 22-inch pillow cover. That slightly oversized insert makes the pillow look so much fuller and more luxurious.
For the front, I’ll add another 22-inch pillow with a 24-inch insert, or switch things up with a beautiful bolster or oversized lumbar. This is also a great place to bring in a pretty pattern or detail that ties all of the colors in the room together. These are my favorite inserts!

Finish with “Randi’s Ruffle”
And finally, my favorite part—the cozy blanket at the end of the bed!
Instead of folding the blanket perfectly across the foot of the bed, I like to loosely gather, scrunch and ruffle it so it looks extra full and inviting. I call it “Randi’s Ruffle!”
It’s such a simple little styling trick, but it gives the bed that relaxed, sink-right-in feeling and keeps a beautifully made bed from looking too perfect or stiff. These are my favorite end of the bed quilts for the best night’s sleep and ruffle effect…

Get the Look for Less
You don’t have to splurge on every piece to create a beautiful, luxurious-looking bed. I’m sharing some of my favorite looks for less so you can recreate the same soft, layered feeling at a more approachable price point.
Start with really soft sheets and a neutral quilt, size up your quilt when you can, use oversized inserts to plump up your pillows, smooth away those wrinkles and add a fresh linen scent. Then finish everything with a cozy throw and a little Randi’s Ruffle.
