Dark to Light Before and After Home Tour

The beautiful thing about design is that it is always changing and evolving! Over the past four years we have been slowly transforming our home to fit our evolving style. When we moved into our home 12 years ago, I loved French design and a neutral color palette with lots of contrast. As the years have rolled on, my style has shifted away from busy, ornate pieces to more simple clean lined pieces. You will still find French influences peppered throughout our home, just in smaller doses. I now describe my style as Transitional with a touch of French Glam.

Well, today I thought I’d take you on a little tour of how our home has changed over the past four years. Take a look at how our home has gone from dark to light and all the before and afters! You won’t believe how different some of these spaces look!

This home tour is broken down room by room. First you will see the before for each room, followed by the after. Look for the sources for each room after the photos of each space. There are also links to each room’s resource page where you can find more photos and detail on that space, like paint colors.

Enjoy the tour and let me know which room transformation is your favorite!

  1. Where to start to pick a favorite? That is hard! 🙂 You’ve done a lot of really beautiful updates to your home Randi. I can’t pick just one, I adore your kitchen, I think it is one of the prettiest I’ve ever seen. I love the guest room the best of all the rooms, (I don’t know which one element I like the best in that room, I think it is a combination of everything you’ve done), I’d love to recreate that look in my guest bedroom. I also LOVE the guest bathroom so much, I love the tile floor and the vanity, superb! I just really like the look and feel of the less cluttered, lighter look and have been doing that in my own home also. It’s funny when we all had the darker look several years ago, we thought it looked so good but now see that the lighter approach is so much more pleasing to the eye. But like you said, design is always changing and that is what makes my love for design so deep, it’s ever evolving. You have given me an idea in my own kitchen after looking at your before and after’s and that is, I am going to get a gold pendant light for my kitchen, I think that is what I need in there to finish it off. And just when I thought I finished my kitchen! 🙂 I do have one question, you show the “staircase before” with photo’s lining the wall on the right, the after photo does not show if the photo’s are still there or if you changed the frames? Can you share a picture from the same view as the before? I have family photo’s in my living room that I have been thinking about moving to the staircase but would like to get some idea’s on how to do it so if you can share, that would be fantastic!

    1. Thank you so much Lucy! I too love the guest bedroom transformation! It has actually made me want to redesign my bedroom! Haha! I will add a photo of the staircase looking down the same way. I was torn as to whether I should add photos back once the trim was finished. Ultimately I decided to keep it clean and leave it blank. xo

  2. IM thinking what a yard sale it must have been! Sseriously your home is gorgeous! I enjoy your blog and seeing how you’ve made changes. Curious though, how long did it take you to accomplish the total change in your home?

    1. Haha! We actually gave many pieces away and donated a ton! It has taken 4 years! A fun, long process! xo

  3. How in the world do you keep all the white in your house clean?! I have white cabinets and would love white walls.

    1. Haha! I have a few tricks up my sleeve! One is my daily cleaning routine. You can search it in the search bar.. just type “cleaning routine”. xo

  4. Wow the transformation is unbelievable. I am in the middle of building a house and I’m finding it very helpful and inspirational looking at the photos. I want to make my new home more simple and light also. Thank you for the sources. My question is why did you decide to do the gold/brass hardware , lighting and curtain rods ? I think they look fabulous and glam, but I just would be a little concerned do you think they’ll get dates as opposed to doing a Chrome? Also in the kitchen the refrigerator /freezer looks like a piece of furniture and is amazing. In my new kitchen I will need to separate the freezer and refrigerator on a long wall in between the range/hood …do you think I can do that and still get the same look and feel? Thank you for all of the sources and when we are ready I will definitely be using them to supplement what i have. I Love the lighting over the kitchen table and in the family room off the kitchen. Also, reading the before and after makes me feel little bit better about donating some of the pieces I have!! My first house was also very ornate and french and I have a lot of gilded gold framed art heavy wood armories, tables etc so your article is extremely helpful in visualizing my new space !!

    1. Thank you so much Veronica! I chose the brass because I love it! It may go out of style but eventually most things do and I want to switch things up. Go with what you love, not what they trends say. Best wishes in your remodeling and redesigning! It will be beautiful! xoxo

  5. Wow! You have been busy!! I think my favorite change would have to be the upstairs family room. Such a drastic transformation! You nailed it girl!!

    1. Thank you so much! That was one of the most dramatic changes in the whole house! It was also a lot of fun! xoxo

  6. Randi! Oh my word.. what a post of transformations! I can’t believe the difference. You are AMAZING! You have done such a beautiful job with your home. Wish I could come over and see it in person! I miss you!! XO

    1. Hey Erin! I miss you too! I think you and Kenny need to plan trip to AZ! You know you always have a place to stay if you do! xo

  7. Randi, what an amazing transformation your home is simply stunning! I’m slowly working through my own home to lighten things up, but it is sloooow. 😃 Your before photos (also beautiful!), have given me inspiration on how to mix in some light with the dark in my own rooms during the transition process.

    1. Thank you Nancy! It sure does take time, but it is so worth it and so fun to watch your home slowly evolve! Best wishes! xoxo
