Baking is my love language! Making a special treat for someone I love is one of my favorite things to do. Baking with my kids or my friends makes it even more fun! Years ago, my friend Karin started a Bake Group with me and a few of our friends. You can read more about it and how to start a Bake Group of your own here.
Karin and I love to get together every once in a while for a baking day. With the kids out of school and things slowing down, we planned a bake day- aka my favorite day! She had some chocolate covered apples that looked like doughnuts on a recent trip and decided to replicate them. When she told me about them, I was dying to make them! So today, we made these darling, yummy Chocolate Covered Apple Sliced Doughnuts.
They would be the perfect treat for dad this weekend for Father’s Day or just a fun treat to make with the kids this summer! Have your kids help make these, they are super simple. Because they are fruit dipped in chocolate, they are basically healthy, right?!!!
Here is the recipe for these chocolate apples that look like doughnuts!
Doughnuts for Dad – Chocolate Covered Apple Slice Doughnut Recipe
Ingredients
- Lemon Juice
- 6 Granny Smith or Honey Crisp Apples
- Ghirardelli Melting Wafers (dark and white)
- Sprinkles
Instructions
- Wash and dry your apples.
- Line 2 cookie sheet with parchment paper.
- Fill a large bowl with cold water and 1-2 tsp of lemon juice. This will keep your apples from browning. Slice the apple into about 1 inch slices.
- Use an apple corer to cut the center out of each slice.
- Place in the cold lemon water until all the apples are sliced.
- Spread out a few sheets of paper towels.
- Place the apple slices on them to dry.
- Melt your wafers in a double boiler or microwave.
- Place a fork in the hole in the apple slice and dip all the way into the melted wafer. We did some white and some dark.
- Let the chocolate drip off the apple. Tap the fork handle on the side of the bowl to help it drip off.
- Set the ring on the parchment lined cookie sheet to solidify.
- If you are only using one color of chocolate, add your sprinkles while the chocolate is still soft.
- You can let them set up on the countertop, or the fridge.
- Repeat until all the slices are dipped. You may need to reheat the chocolate.
- Once the chocolate is firm, dip the ring into the opposite color. You can add food coloring to the white if desired.
- Return each ring to the parchment lined sheet.
- While the chocolate is still wet, add the sprinkles to each apple.
- Let harden, then eat!
- Store them in or out of the fridge. If your home is warm, you may want to keep them in the fridge.
My sweet friend Karin! You may remember her from when I shared her bedroom makeover from last year. If you missed it, you can see it here.
My little guy wanted to take one to each of his neighbor friends!
I hope you try these and love them as much as we do! They are best made with someone you love! I am so lucky to have such a dear friend in my life. God gives us friends to help us through the lows and share the highs!

These donuts, or should I say apples, are the best! Unlike a regular donut you actually feel satisfied after eating this donut.
